David Hockney arrived in the United States a few years after the Beatles and has since become another of Great Britain’s best-known cultural exports. His early paintings of Southern California viewed American culture with a more objective eye than any of the native artists were able to externalize. He has continued to develop an artistic career characterized by more sensitive cultural antennae than most of his contemporaries. He was one of the oldest artists included in the most recent Whitney Biennial, which is decidedly an exhibition about and reserved for younger artists. Hockney has been one of the most active contemporary artists with respect to printmaking which has always been a vehicle for the artist to re-inform his paintings. Hockney’s printmaking experiments with home color copiers and collaged photo prints continue to be referenced by many of the younger artists working in Britain.
