This exhibition of work by Margot Voorhies Thompson looks at the relationships between calligraphic forms and language. Similar to nature, language has the ability to reinvent itself and adapt over time, or run to extinction. Through adaptation, the meaning of our words change. Thompson takes language and explores these changes by reinterpreting its meaning through form. The words are undecipherable and her unique idiom expresses the lyrical form rather than the symbolism. She deconstructs the alphabet literally by breaking up the letters into abstract elements.

Her work is in collections including the Portland Art Museum, the Stanford University Hospital, and the Printmaking Workshop in New York. Margot Thompson has completed several collaborative book commissions with Kim Stafford, Pattian Rogers, and Wendell Berry for the University of Oregon’s Knight Library Press. Other recent commissions include pieces for Oregon University of Health and Sciences, Portland; Portland State University; Kaiser Permanente, Tualatin, OR; the Woodstock Branch Multnomah County Library; and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, both in Portland.

Slideshow Potshow - Food and Photography

SLIDELUCK POTSHOW to be held on Saturday, May 10, 2008
at Straub Collaborative Studio.

WHAT: Slideluck Potshow is a slideshow and a potluck to which members the arts and photography communities bring food, and submit a maximum of 5 minutes worth of slides. The evening begins with a couple hours of mingling and dining and on the home-cooked delights of participants. Following the potluck, the lights are dimmed, the crowd is hushed, and a spectacular slideshow commences.

Slideluck Potshow is a forum for exposing artists, curators, and editors to new work, while infusing the arts community with a non-commercial vitality and refreshing exchange. Photojournalists, painters, sculptors, designers, fashion, and fine art photographers all show their work alongside one another in a relaxed and spirited atmosphere. It is an event that brings together scores of spirited and creative individuals-- and what could be better than that?

WHO: The event is open to the public and the slideshow will feature artists from the Portland area. Slideluck is an opportunity for artists and art-appreciators to come together and share their work in a congenial, non-competitive atmosphere. Presenters range from the very accomplished to the up and coming, but regardless of status, none is allotted more than 5 minutes for their slideshow. Participants are encouraged to take creative risks, in terms of content and presentation. Slideshows are often accompanied by music, commentary, or other surprises. The theme for this seasons event is "Transmutations." Work by Mark Colman and others will be featured.

Slideluck Potshow was founded in the backyard of advertising
and editorial photographer, Casey Kelbaugh, in 2000. Kelbaugh produced 20 shows around Seattle, and is now, along with Alys Kenny, organizing 3 events a year in NYC. Slideluck takes place in about 25 cities globally, including Berlin, Mexico City, San Francisco, London, Milan, Sao Paolo, Barcelona, and Copenhagen.

WHEN: Saturday, May 10, 2008, from 7pm until 11pm.
The potluck begins at 7pm and the slideshow begins about 8:30pm.

WHERE: Straub Collaborative Studio, 2503 N. Albina,
