“These forms celebrate my long-term interest in the gathering of materiél and the making of hand-woven forms,” says Cockburn. “In producing this body of work, it was important for me to incorporate my interest in fibres, my love for the natural Australian landscape, and my commitment to creating works that document a personal journey.” The patterns she uses “were inspired by the harsh colours and soft movement of low-lying grasses found throughout Australia. Within these grassy plains were the remains of beautiful old trees, some standing and others lying down. Together their strength and presence inspired me to create works that reflected these strong lines and celebrated their existence.”

A graduate of the Australian National University (ANU), in Canberra, Australia, Cockburn chose glass as her medium because of a belief that it “holds the colours, movement and touch of the maker’s hand in an honest, stable and incredibly beautiful medium.” Her work has been exhibited in Australia, Europe and the US and is included in the collection of the Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Springs, CA.
